Chapter 20

“I knew you were in trouble when the thunderstorm came out of nowhere,” Oleander whispered to me. “I called Max and told him you were at Henry’s, and that we thought Henry was the murderer.”

I’d decided to invite everyone over for a coffee party to celebrate the fact that Oleander was off the hook and that Henry Swan had been arrested for Ursula Hackles’ murder. It was a beautiful morning, which meant I had thrown open all the doors and windows to let the scent of lavender drift in on the warm sea breeze. Oleander and I were in the kitchen, chatting away. She told me how worried Max had been, and I couldn’t help but feel butterflies in my stomach.

Max was also there. Oleander had invited him, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. I was a little embarrassed about sobbing all over him the previous day, and my embarrassment only grew when he knocked on my door. I’d blushed and let him in.

Harriet was there too, celebrating the fact that she was no longer considered a suspect. I don’t think the police ever did consider her seriously, but then again, she was convinced they had.

I had finally made everyone’s coffee—and this time I had given Max black coffee just the way he liked it—when there were five brisk knocks on the front door. Through the glass door, I could make out the shapes of two men. Athanasius looked out the window and then turned to me. “Oh no! I do believe those detectives are here.”

We all looked at each other. “The coffee machine!” Max said.

“I’ll take care of it,” I hissed. “Everyone, hide your coffee! Oleander, you let them in.”

I sprinted to my coffee machine, on my way to the kitchen grabbing one of the throw rugs I had put over one of the old sofas to disguise its hideousness. I flung it over the coffee machine and hoped like crazy it wouldn’t heat to the degree that it caught on fire.

I dumped some packets of pasta and rice on the top and added a loaf of bread for good measure. Sure, the detectives would know it was a coffee machine if they lifted up the throw rug, but if they didn’t, I should be fine.

As I raced back into the living room, the detectives walked through the door. “Ms Bloom, sorry to intrude,” the younger one said.

“That’s fine,” I said. “What can I do for you?”

“We wanted to inform you that Henry Swan has made a full confession,” the older one said.

I smiled. “Thanks for telling me. Will I get my shoes back?”

The younger one nodded. “Yes, after the sentencing. Dr Swan’s confession means you won’t have to give your testimony in a long, drawn out criminal trial.”

“That’s good news,” I said. I was hoping they would leave.

The older one sniffed the air. “What’s that smell?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “I do have scented candles burning.”

“It smells suspiciously like coffee.” He wrinkled his nose.

“We all know coffee is illegal in this town.
